Unboxing our client welcome kit

by Chris Wilcox

New beginnings are cause for celebration. We also understand that everyone feels nervous at the start of an engagement and that’s completely natural. We’ve all been there; the beginning of a new relationship is filled with unknowns. Our welcome packet is intended to make our clients feel secure, informed, and appreciated from the moment we kick off the project.

Our original welcome packet was a portfolio full of papers, but we knew there must be a better way of presenting this information. We started by interviewing clients and members of the Boston product community about items they use day-to-day and then hand selected high quality versions of those products to include in our kits, along with key information about our team. Of course in the design business, details are everything. Just like we’re enamored with those moments of delight in digital products, we wanted to bring some of that magic and attention to detail to each physical piece of the welcome kit.

First impressions matter

We started by designing and manufacturing a sleek black box to act as the vessel. The triangular pattern applied as metallic foil adds a high quality feel that will make you want to use it over and over. The opening flap on the box has magnetic closures to keep contents safe inside when closed. Once you open the box to reveal what’s waiting for you, you can see a simple Fresh Tilled Soil logo printed in white on the inside flap.

Team cards

Chemistry amongst our client and internal teams is important for a successful project. To share some more information about who our team is, we printed team cards. Created in the spirit of baseball cards, they include fun facts like favorite vacation spot, life ambition, guilty pleasure, and more. They’re great conversation starters and a fun way to immediately inject our team’s personality.

Form and function

Everyday items don’t need to be boring. We chose these tools of the trade because of their design value as well as their durability and performance:

Welcome packet fun

  • MUJI .38mm pen in black – after testing more than a dozen pens, we decided to stick with a company favorite. The MUJI .38mm pen has a thin, precise tip with a smooth glide as you run it across a page, perfect for sketching sessions and note taking. It’s sleek, minimal design makes it as eye-catching as it is functional.
  • Kalledevarapura coffee from Barrington Coffee Roasting Company – this makes a very smooth cup of coffee with notes of filbert, cream, and milk chocolate. We decided on whole bean since it stays fresher for longer periods of time. It’s great to break out for those long days before a new feature or product launch.
  • Williams-Sonoma stainless steel mug – this simple, beautiful mug will keep coffee hot for longer because of its double walled insulation.
  • Moleskine cahier journal (large) – this notebook is a great mix for creatives and to-do list crushers alike. Grid lines put some structure on the page to encourage writing and drawing. We used our embosser on the front cover to add a Fresh Tilled Soil touch with our crest.

By client popular demand, we recently started to include stickers of our logo and logotype created by Sticker Mule. We’re always looking for new things to include and are playing around with additional retail items to produce. Have feedback or ideas on what to include next? Send us a tweet to @freshtilledsoil, we’d love to hear from you.
